Some of the best Milan Fashion Week sunglasses were not on the runway. Outside the Spring/Summer 2027 womenswear shows, which ran from 22 to 27 September, we picked out five street-style looks worth saving. Three of them went for a black cat-eye, worn with clothes that had nothing vintage about them.
That is a nice surprise, because the cat-eye has spent years filed under retro. In these looks it came with black satin, a fringed bag, a pearl collar, a pleated mini. Nobody was in costume. The lift at the corner did the job a sharp shoulder does: it gives the face structure without adding anything loud.
The other two went elsewhere: a classic black wayfarer with tailoring, and an oversized wraparound next to a slim rectangle. For more of the season, read this alongside our Paris SS27 edit.
Here are the five, and the Vibes frames that get you there.

Day two, an arrival with a wall of photographers behind her. A slim black cat-eye, a black satin shirt, a black fringed bag and curtain bangs. With everything else in black, the frame is the only line on the face, and the narrow upswept lens is what makes the look read sharp rather than heavy. Delta 9 and Hollis are both mid-scale frames with a softer, rounder cat-eye lift, and both come in a solid lens as well as a mirror. Solid is the one to pick here.

The best-dressed photograph we found all week. A sharp, angular black cat-eye under a pleated black hat, with a silver bob, a pearl collar, a crystal brooch and a ruffled black blouse. That is a lot of jewellery, and the frame still holds its own because the wing is pointed rather than rounded. That angle is the detail to copy. Hollis and Delta 9 carry a softer, rounder version of that upswept corner at mid scale. Go solid lens to keep it graphic.

Day six, two women, two takes on the same idea. On the right, a narrow black cat-eye with a black satin mini and a lace panel. On the left, a fuller black frame that sits between a cat-eye and a square, worn with an ombré silk dress. Same colour, different scale, and both work because the frame matches the weight of the outfit. Hollis is the softer, rounder cat-eye. Vesper is the oversized square with a solid lens if the fuller frame is more you.

The least showy look here and probably the most useful. Classic black wayfarers, a grey single-breasted jacket worn as a dress, a black woven bag. No statement, just proportion: the heavy brow of a wayfarer balances a strong shoulder. Loft is the mid-scale wayfarer with a solid lens, the closest read. Marlow is the same shape in mirror.

Our favourite pairing in the set. On the left, a slim black rectangle with an oversized striped shirt and a long denim skirt. On the right, an oversized black wraparound that edges toward a shield, with an olive bomber and tailored shorts. Two frames with nothing in common except that both commit. Delmar is the mid-scale rectangle for the left. Juno and Radar are the oversized wraps for the right.

Questions
What sunglasses were people wearing at Milan Fashion Week SS27?
In the street-style looks we picked from outside the Spring/Summer 2027 shows, the cat-eye came up most often: black frames worn with satin, tailoring and statement jewellery rather than anything vintage. A classic wayfarer and an oversized wraparound round out the edit.
How do you wear cat-eye sunglasses without looking retro?
Pick a black frame with a dark solid lens and wear it with modern, pared-back clothes. In Milan the cat-eye went with black satin, a tailored jacket and simple black pieces. Keep the rest of the look clean and the upswept corner reads sharp, not costume.
Do cat-eye sunglasses suit every face shape?
Most faces can wear one at the right scale. The lift at the outer corner adds angles, which balances rounder and softer faces especially well. A softer, rounder cat-eye such as Hollis or Delta 9 is the easiest starting point.
What is the difference between cat-eye and wayfarer sunglasses?
Both have a heavier brow line, but a wayfarer is a trapezoid with a gentle tilt, while a cat-eye sweeps up sharply at the outer corner. The wayfarer reads classic and neutral. The cat-eye reads more deliberate and more feminine in its lines.
